

Portrait of an Wa women smokes pipe in Wengding. The Wa, which literally means “mountain dwellers”, is the hilltribe that inhabit the Sino-Burmese. Known as one of the last headhunting tribe until mid-twentieth century, their population in both countries now approximately no more than one million. In the homogenous society of modern China, Wa is one of more than 50 officially state-recognized ethnic minorities. They can be found around the southwestern corners of Yunnan province.
